It really is a no brainer but not often utilized by those I know. Another perk to dining at home with friends is that you can visit longer than you can in a restaurant (of course that could also be a minus). Try to remember that eating in a restaurant is not about the food. It is about the experience. Whether you like noisy and active, or quiet and romantic, eating out is about getting out of the house, not having to do the preparation or cleaning up, being waited upon, and alloting time to be with one another or with yourself. So the cost of this experience also has to be factored in. Eating at home and going out to a movie, or eating out in a restaurant should be balanced against each other as forms of entertainment, not forms of food cost. Otherwise, I can't agree more with most of your points. Skipping the dessert is almost a no brainer. They are usually small and very expensive. A stop at the bakery on the way home will give you an entire cake for the cost of one slice. Drinking water is both cheaper and healthier.
